Project 2 CASE STUDY - An Asian Street
Every city in Asia has its own unique characteristics, due to the different ways of life of its dwellers. The appearance of the streets today may have changed in the past decades due to modernisation and globalisation, which in turn may have changed the way of life of its community. This project will involve the study of street in an Asian city to understand the historical and social aspects of a city by examining the development of tradition, modernization and globalization of streets.
We are required to visit a designated area of streets in an Asian city and present observations in a series of photography work and written essay.
In a group of five, we have visited to Jonker Street in Malacca. Observations are done and photographs are shoot during the visit.
The study of the street is divided into 4 main categories:
Streets as an experience of the urban life
Streets as programmes or events
Streets as language – semiotic (the study of signs) readings of streets
Street as container of society, culture, history and memory
An online A4 size photobook containing front and back cover with a series of 40 photographs to publish online is done.
