Project Nature Appreciaion Center (NAC)

In this projetc, we are assigned to design a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users. We explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users. This project requires us to propose a communal facility accommodating several related functions such as meeting and learning in a suburban context. We are to develop our own concept for the communal space based on the research of the area and the community’s needs.

 

At the first stage of this project, we are assigned to work in a group of four or five persons for precedent studies. We have chosen the Vandusen Botanical Garden Visitor Center as the case study building. And also we have visited Belum Rainforest Resort in Perak as it is chosen as a case study building for the precedent studies of poetic spaces and sustainable design.

After we have done the precedent studies, we continued to work individually on the project. We are required to come out with a proposal of the Nature Appreciation Center (NAC) based on the precedent studies and site analysis. We are to come out with a design concept for the design.

After this, the design process came to the second stage which the concept is carried out in the building design.  At this stage, we are to present our design concept and building design in an internal interim.

At the third stage which is also the last stage of the design process of this project, I designed the NAC with the concept of Oasis. The form of the building is designed following the function of the building as I started my design by arranging the spatial organization according to the function and activity of the spaces. Besides, the spatial organization is arranged referring to the site analysis.

A model showing the massing+structure of the building is done. 

The center block of the building is created to showcase the structure of the building to show the permeability of the design and also the skylight of the building while the other two blocks just showed the massing of the building.
