Project 2c Tea House

The exploding cube tea house

This project has extended the understanding of design concept and process. This project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, function and space in architecture. The site is the Bharat tea plantation at Cameron Highlands. I have chosen one of the abstract drawing which I have drawn as my design concept. The abstract drawing is drawn based on waterfall at the Bharat tea plantation. When the water falls, it gives a feeling of centrality and when the water splashes, it feels like exploding.

As a development of the project tea for two, I decide to remain using cube as the basic form. So I designed an exploding cube which exploded into cubes. Firstly, I built a sketch model by making cubes and gathered them together. The boxes are arranged to show the exploding of the cube. However, the design is still not capable to carry out the concept and also the functions of the spaces have to be rearranged. So i decided to make some changes and enhanced the grid of the building. The explosion of the model seemed to be not fulfilling the concept. The explosion is more likely in a same plane. Therefore, I created another model which the boxes are arranged in different levels. After all, I came up with a final model which can be opened up to show the layout of the floor plans.

I have gained experience of exploring spaces in this project. I started to explore the size of spaces by measuring in my own house to get familiar with measurements. I also experienced how to consider site context in designing the tea house. I learned how to blend the concept and function in the design process.
